Canny Coats

Chloe Autumn/Winter 2012

Kate Fletcher states; "The plain coat is the archetypical slow garment; it is generally bought only after due thought and concideration. The coat is used intensively for some periods of the year and is dry-cleaned once a season.
Rather than resisting all signs of wear and tear, the fabric ages gracefully.

The coat has a definite yet flexible design and comes with spare buttons, thread and swatches of fabric for mending, and an ongoing relationship with the designer/store to restyle or refit the coat."

This is where I started thinking about the collection as a whole. I wanted it to be a combination of wardrobe essentials that work as practical garments. I sketched and recorded as many coats as possible to create something that reflects detail and practicality yet works as a sustainable, fashionable piece.

Canny Inspiration

Last summer I started researching into my final major project.
I started looking at Native American beliefs and values and started to translate this into modern sustainable fashion practices. I added a Geordie twist to celebrate my heritage and add a sense of localism and craft that translates into a fun, ethical brand, 'Canny Clothing'.

Shop & Rock

In February 2012 I volunteered as a stylist for Shop&Rock, a vintage fashion and music event held at Northumbria to raise funds for The British Red Cross. Shop and Rock won the Northumbria University RAG on-off event of the year award and also the British Red Cross innovation of the year award.

As part of my final year at university I undertook a project with Movember, to help raise awareness for men's health.
I decided to design and make a Movember diary including daily tasks and motivational illustrations of celebrity moustaches to help Movember participants enjoy Movember and grow them mo's!
